San Diego, Calif. —San Diego Mesa College is accepting nominations for the 2019 San Diego Mesa College Distinguished Alumni Award. The Alumni Award program was established in 2011 to recognize former students who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of academic excellence and equity at San Diego Mesa College. The award recipient will be announced in March and invited to be the guest speaker at Mesa College’s 2019 Commencement Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 18. Nominations are due no later than February 22, 2019. Anyone in the greater community is encouraged to submit a nomination.

In March 2015, the California Community College Board of Governors voted unanimously to approve that San Diego Mesa College offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management (HIM). Mesa College is one of only fifteen community colleges in the state to offer a BA degree, and made history in 2018 with the first graduating class to receive bachelors from the College.

Mesa Fashion students recently visited the Coronado Public Library for an exclusive tour of the Edith Head Exhibition. The exhibit, displayed in conjunction with the Coronado Film Festival’s “Focus on Fashion,” showed design renderings and sketches by Fashion Icon, Edith Head.

On December 13, 2018, Mesa College Associated Students (AS) hosted their first Holiday Celebration in collaboration with CalWORKs and EOPS/CARE. The celebration served as a stress reliever for the CalWORKs students, who are also single parents, and provided them with a space to celebrate the holidays with their children. There were arts and crafts tables for the families to enjoy, gingerbread cookies to construct gingerbread houses, games, and a learning station that contained information on three major holiday celebrations; Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Christmas.

The San Diego Mesa College Applied Music Program hosted a music recital on November 28. The students performed classical music that included pieces by Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Georges Bizet, Robert Muczynski, and other famous composers. The pieces included the piano, guitar, flute, violin, drums, sax, and marimba.

Associated Students (AS) of San Diego Mesa College kicked off the holiday season with the 5th Annual AS Thanksgiving Feast. This event, hosted by students for students, provided the Mesa community with a warm, welcoming environment to break bread together in the true spirit of Thanksgiving. This event started five years ago with a small group of students and has grown to serving over 250 students.
