On March 7, the Mesa College celebration of Deaf Day took place in the Sunrise Plaza. The event commemorated the 30th Anniversary of the 1988 “Deaf President Now” student protest at Gallaudet University, leading to the first Deaf President of that institution since it was established in 1864. During the event, Mesa students learned lessons of silence, and the privilege attached to those without hearing disabilities.

On March 12, Mesa College honored Gracia Molina de Pick at the 7th Annual Feminist Lecture Series. Over 100 students, faculty, administrators and staff gathered to discuss the role of Chicanas in San Diego communities and the legacy that De Pick has left upon feminist lifestyle, especially for students at Mesa College.

On Feb 8, 2018 the Woman to Woman Conference: Protect Your Crown event was held in MC 211, with over 70 including students, staff, and faculty in attendance. The event focused on inclusive empowerment for men and women of all ages. Speakers included President Pamela T. Luster, Vice President of Student Services Ashanti Hands, Professor Starla Lewis, and FAST Scholars Counselor and Coordinator Sade Burrell.

Helena Almassy graduated in 2017 from San Diego Mesa College. That same year, she was awarded the 3CSN Learning Assistance Project Tutor of the Year Award at Tutor Expo. While she was a student at Mesa, she held positions as a Peer Navigator and as a Tutor for Math and Spanish in the MT2C. She is currently in her first year at UCSD and thinks often of her time at Mesa.

On Thursday, March 1, 2018 the first of the Spring 2018 Financial Literacy Speaker Series events – The Tax Man Cometh – took place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in LRC 435. Guest speaker, Paul Lim, addressed nearly 50 students, staff and faculty on the basics of income tax, issues to consider, how to calculate deductions, and various strategies the common working person can use to avoid paying too much in taxes each year. Attendees were busy taking notes and filing out the provided tax forms as Lim guided them through the process of filling in the right numbers on these often confusing forms.
