San Diego, CA. — Today, Friday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m., San Diego Mesa College will host their 58th Commencement Ceremony, where nearly 700 of the 2,000 academic degrees and certificates earned this year will be conferred. Among them are the sixth set of students receiving Bachelor of Science degrees in Health Information Management (HIM), scores of first-generation students, and over 100 each of student-athletes and Promise students. Nearly 650 students are graduating with more than one degree, and the Class of 2023 boasts 110 valedictorians and over 700 students who are graduating with honors. Mesa’s youngest graduate is 17, and the oldest is 72.

San Diego, CA. — On Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14, San Diego Mesa College Culinary Arts Professors and students will be participating at the Annual Gator by the Bay Festival. This year, Professor and Chef Michael Fitzgerald, who has been participating in Gator by the Bay for nearly 15 years, and Adjunct Professor and Chef Jack Gambrell from San Diego Mesa College Culinary Arts Department will be joined by renowned Louisiana Chef Patrick Mould. They will be doing cooking demos and providing professional instruction in preparing several favorite Southern specialties and samples. Michael Fitzgerald will be demoing at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, cooking beignets, chicory coffee, and other traditional dishes. Jack Gambrell will be demoing at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, cooking Jambalaya.

The event will feature a live in-person runway show, a design showcase, awards and a VIP reception including music performed by students from the music department.

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the Shining Light on Generosity event, San Diego Mesa College debuted the naming of The Stand: The Pamela T. Luster Resource Center, in honor of former President Dr. Pamela T. Luster. Additionally, the event served as an intimate gathering that honored and recognized multiple donors who helped the Mesa College Resiliency Fund become a reality.

San Diego Mesa College student, Jason Compy, is expected to graduate Pre-med this spring majoring in Bio Chemistry. Jason hopes to attend USC, but has already been accepted to UCLA. So, he plans to become a Bruin or a Trojan this fall. With graduation around the corner, Jason reflects on the many obstacles he has overcome on his journey through life.
